Construction equipment vehicles are usually very large and don’t move terribly fast. They are also fairly easy to spot when being driven on public roads and highways. For that reason, those who choose to steal these vehicles will often hide their misappropriated machines for a few days to allow a ‘cooling off’ period before trying to move or sell it. However, smart construction companies know that the LoJack® System is ever vigilant and will assist their local police in tracking down their equipment before it goes very far.

On April 12th, 2013, the owner of a John Deere Track Skid Steer Loader contacted the Irvine, CA Police to report that this vehicle and another piece of construction equipment had been stolen. Irvine PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into their state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the John Deere.

A short time later, Irvine PD officers had picked up the homing signal on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. They quickly isolated the signal and requested assistance. The Orange County Sheriff’s Helicopter pinpointed the location of the skid steer, which was hidden from view under some cut off tree limbs. Irvine PD officers began surveillance and arrested three suspects who attempted to move the stolen John Deere with a truck and trailer that also turned out to be stolen. The skid steer was soon returned to its owners.
