The purpose of dropping your vehicle off at a mechanic’s garage is usually to have it repaired, not ripped off. However, plans often go awry when a car thief is involved, especially when that car thief is someone you know!

On April 6, 2013, the owners of a Nissan Armada contacted the Huntington Beach, California Police to report their car had been stolen from an auto shop. The PD verified the theft and immediately entered the Armada’s VIN (vehicle identification number) into the police computer. This automatically activated the LoJack® unit, installed at Douglas Nissan in Huntington Beach, CA, which was hidden in the vehicle.

A short time later, officers from the Santa Ana, CA Police Dept. picked up the signal from the stolen Nissan on the LoJack tracking computer installed in their police vehicle, and located the vehicle parked on the street with its hood open, and a male working on the engine. While the officers waited for another patrol unit to assist in the recovery, the Armada drove by them with the suspect at the wheel.  A quick felony traffic stop was initiated and the driver detained.  It was later learned that the suspect was actually the son of the vehicle owners, and he was released to his parents pending further legal action. There was no damage to the vehicle itself.
