On January 28, 2013, the owner of a 2007 BMW 335i was warming the vehicle in his driveway in the 16200 block of 17th Avenue Court East near Tacoma, when opportunistic thieves drove off with the car.   The theft was reported to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Pierce County deputies verified the theft and entered the vehicle identification number into the state and federal crime computers. That process automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the BMW.

Minutes later, Pierce County deputies received the silent LoJack homing signal transmitting from the stolen BMW on the Police Tracking Computer installed in their patrol cars.  Following audible and visual cues on the LoJack display, they tracked the signal to the 15400 block of 10th Avenue Court East in Spanaway.  It was parked in the driveway of an abandoned house at that location.  It did not appear to be damaged.

The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in this BMW 335i in December of 2006 when it was purchased new at Irvine BMW in Irvine, California.  The current owner was not aware it was equipped with LoJack.  The approximate value is $22,500.
