On December 26, 2012, a car rental company reported that they rented a 2010 Hyundai Sonata to a man for a short-term rental in September. The man never returned the vehicle, and after numerous failed attempts to contact the renter, the agency contacted the Nassau County’s 5th Precinct to report the vehicle stolen.

Nassau County officers arrived at the scene, verified the theft and had the Hyundai’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short while later, officers from the Nassau County’s 3rd Precinct, Wantagh, Nassau County picked up the silent LoJack homing signal from the stolen Sonata on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol vehicle. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computers, the officers tracked the vehicle to through various streets in the confines of Wantagh, and eventually located the vehicle in the driveway of a private home. After conferring with the occupant of the house, the officers then called the detectives who, after a brief investigation, placed the suspect under arrest for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle..

The vehicle was recovered in excellent condition, without any damage. The rental agent was notified and was very happy to have their vehicle located so quickly, especially after three months of trying to retrieve it.

The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the 2010 Hyundai at Herb Chambers Hyundai in Auburn, Massachusetts on May 26, 2010.
