On August 2, 2012, the owner of a 2012 Toyota Prius contacted the New York Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen while parked on the street at 10TH Avenue & Dyckman Street in upper Manhattan. NYPD’s 34th Precinct verified the theft and entered the Toyota’s information into the state and federal crime computers (NYSPIN/ NCIC), which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short while later, officers from NYPD’s 34th Precinct picked up the silent LoJack homing signals from the stolen Toyota on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computers, the officers tracked and located the vehicle to a commercial district on Broadway and 180th Street. The officers impounded the undamaged vehicle for safekeeping and eventually returned it to the owner.

The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Toyota Prius on November 23, 2011 at Toyota of Turnersville in Turnersville, New Jersey.
