On August 8, 2012, the owner of a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta contacted the Charleston Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen from a parking lot in the city. Charleston Police Department verified the theft and entered the Volkswagen’s information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short while later, officers from the Charleston Police Department picked up the silent LoJack homing signals from the stolen Volkswagen on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computers, the officers tracked the vehicle to a parking area close to a night club. The Jetta was loaded on the back of a roll back wrecker. The wrecker did not have a business sign and had invalid license tags. The driver of the tow truck was located inside the club. During police questioning, the driver stated that he received a telephone call from an unknown caller asking him to tow the Jetta to his shop for repairs. The suspect was arrested and the investigation is continuing.

The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Volkswagen Jetta in December of 2007 at Volkswagen of Van Nuys, California.
