On June 5, 2012, the owner of a 2003 BMW Z-3 Roadster Convertible contacted the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen from 1400 K Street NW in Washington, DC. District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department officers verified the theft and entered the BMW’s information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short while later, officers with the Prince Georges County Police Department picked up the silent Lojack homing signals from the stolen BMW on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computers, the officers tracked the vehicle to the 5500 Block Columbia Park Road in the Landover area of Prince Georges County, Maryland. There, the officers recovered the unoccupied stolen BMW.

The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the BMW Z-3 in March of 2003 at BMW of Towson in Towson, Maryland.
