On June 4, 2012 the owner of a 2011 CASE 580 Backhoe from Sunbelt Rentals contacted the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department to report that their backhoe was stolen from their construction site in Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas, sometime during the weekend of June 2 – 3rd. Bexar County officers verified the theft and had the backhoe’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the equipment.

A short while later, the State Police helicopter #107 picked up the backhoe’s silent LoJack homing signal on the Police Tracking Computer installed in the helicopter. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computers, the flight officers in the helicopter tracked the backhoe to a large open pasture on the far west side of unincorporated Bexar County. Ground patrol units were notified and given directions to the location where the backhoe was recovered. No noticeable damage was observed to the backhoe. Sunbelt Rentals officials were summoned to the location to claim their property.
