Sleeping Car Thief Startled Awake in Stolen Mercedes, Arrested by NYPD Officers

On the night of May 20, 2012, the owner of a Mercedes Benz C320 contacted the New York Police Department to report the vehicle stolen. The owner had parked and locked the vehicle on the street where he lives in Laurelton, Queens, and when he returned for it, found it missing. After verifying the theft, NYPD officers had the Mercedes’ information entered into the state and federal crime computers, which activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short time later, officers with NYPD’s 113th Precinct picked up the Mercedes’ silent LoJack signal on the LoJack Police Tracking Computer installed in their police vehicles. Following the directional and audible signal on the LoJack Tracker, the officers tracked the vehicle to a residential area of the South Ozone Park section of Queens. There, they located the vehicle parked on a residential street. As they approached the vehicle, they observed a male asleep in the vehicle. As he awoke, the suspect was startled and immediately bolted from the vehicle. A foot chase ensued; police eventually caught the suspect in a nearby backyard and immediately placed him under arrest. The vehicle was recovered with no damage. The owner was notified and was elated to know that his vehicle was recovered so quickly.
