Homicide Victim’s Mercedes Stolen in Arizona, Recovered 1200 Miles Away Using LoJack

During the overnight hours of April 19, 2012, a homicide was discovered in the east Mesa area, and homicide detectives determined that the victim’s Mercedes GL450 was missing and likely stolen. After completing a vehicle theft report, Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies had the Mercedes’ information entered into the state and federal crime computer systems, which activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.
A short time later, officers with the Houston (Texas) Police Department began to pick up the Mercedes’ silent LoJack signal on the LoJack Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol cars. Following the directional and audible signals on the LoJack Trackers, the officers located the stolen Mercedes parked at an apartment complex in Houston. Officers established surveillance in an attempt to locate the homicide suspect. Several hours later, officers learned that the Mercedes had been parked at that location for several days. The vehicle was impounded and processed for evidence.
Through good police work, a suspect was located and arrested in Florida on May 2, 2012.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Mercedes at the owner’s request in July 2006.
