Malden Police Stop, Arrest Driver of BMW 330 Stolen in Billerica

The owner of a 2004 BMW 330 last saw his vehicle parked outside of his residence in Billerica, MA, on the evening of April 14, 2012. When he returned to his vehicle the following morning, he discovered it missing, and immediately reported the theft to the Billerica Police Department. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the BMW’s information entered into the state and federal crime computer systems. This routine entry automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed inside the stolen BMW, prompting the transponder to begin emitting a silent homing signal.
A short while later, officers from the Malden and Medford Police Departments began to pick up the homing signal on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol vehicles. One of the Malden officers successfully tracked and quickly located the occupied stolen vehicle, in the area of Highland Avenue. The officer immediately requested back-up, and then initiated a felony stop of the vehicle on Sterling Avenue in Malden. The officers conducted a brief investigation, and the driver was arrested on assorted felony charges. The responding officer had the BMW towed from the scene for safekeeping until the owner could be notified. The suspect was transported from the recovery scene for processing.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the BMW at the owner’s request on May 14, 2003.
