Surveillance Cameras ID Suspects in Theft of Caterpillar Excavator

A 2002 Caterpillar Excavator 950G was left overnight at a construction site on Barnes Avenue in the Bronx. When the owner returned to the site on the morning of April 25, 2012, he discovered the equipment missing and immediately reported the theft to the New York Police Department’s 47th precinct.

NYPD officers entered the excavator’s information into the stolen data computer (NYSPIN/ NCIC). This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.  Neither the owners nor law enforcement had to do anything else to activate the LoJack Vehicle Recovery Network, because LoJack’s interface with law enforcement is both seamless and instantaneous.

Minutes later, detectives assigned to NYPD’s Auto Crime Division picked up the Caterpillar’s LoJack signal in their vehicle equipped with a LoJack Police Tracking Computer. The officers followed the signal on the computer display and located the stolen excavator, parked inside a gated commercial storage yard on Provost Ave in the confines of the Bronx’s 47th precinct. Surveillance cameras at the location captured the suspects delivering the stolen Caterpillar to the yard. One suspect has been identified and is currently wanted for questioning. The undamaged $100,000.00 excavator was released to an extremely happy owner at the recovery scene.
