Honda Civic Stolen from Driveway with Keys Inside — Recovered in Minutes by Miami-Dade Officers

On Saturday morning, January 14, 2012, the owner of a 2006 Honda Civic 2-door coupe contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department to report the vehicle stolen. Upon arrival at the scene, the responding officer met with the owner, who stated that sometime during the previous night, someone had stolen the vehicle from his driveway, with the keys inside.
The officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the vehicle’s information entered into the federal and state crime computer databases. This routine police procedure automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Honda Civic.
Minutes later, a Miami-Dade Police Department officer received the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Honda’s LoJack unit on his patrol car’s LoJack Police Tracking Computer. Following the directional and signal strength cues on the computer, the officer, along with backup, located the unoccupied Honda in the driveway of an abandoned house near N.W. 45th Court and 194th Street in Miami Gardens. Because the vehicle was outside of the officer’s jurisdiction, the Miami Gardens Police Department was contacted to dispatch an officer to recover the vehicle. The vehicle was recovered with damage to the right side of the car where it rubbed against the left front bumper of the owner’s father’s car during the theft.
The vehicle was released to the very grateful owner, who was relieved to learn that the Honda Civic was equipped with the LoJack Vehicle Recovery System by its previous owner on June 1, 2006.
