Toyota RAV-4 Stolen in Lower Manhattan Recovered the Same Day in Queens

On January 21, 2012, the owner of a 2006 Toyota RAV-4 left his home in Rockland County and drove his vehicle to his place of employment in lower Manhattan. When the owner ended his shift at work, he returned to his vehicle and discovered it was stolen, and immediately notified NYPD of the theft.

NYPD officers filed a stolen vehicle report and entered the Toyota’s information into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.  Neither the owners nor law enforcement had to do anything else to activate the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery Network because LoJack’s interface with law enforcement is both seamless and instantaneous.

Later that day, officers assigned to NYPD’s Auto Crime Division picked up the LoJack signal in their vehicle equipped with a LoJack Police Tracking Computer. Following the computer’s cues, the officers tracked the stolen Toyota to a residential street around 233rd Street and 130th Avenue in Queens. Police established surveillance on the Toyota for several hours to no avail. The vehicle was impounded and eventually released to a very happy owner.

The LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Toyota RAV-4 on June 17, 2009.
