Car Thief Arrested in Drive-Thru Line in Stolen Jeep Cherokee

On January 23, 2012, the owner of a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee contacted the Austin Police Department to report his vehicle stolen.
The reporting officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the stolen Jeep’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Jeep and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
Nineteen minutes later, Austin Police Officers picked up the silent LoJack homing signal on the LoJack Police Tracking Computer installed in their vehicle. Following the computer’s cues, the officers tracked the stolen Jeep to a fast food restaurant, where they observed it in line at the drive thru. The suspect, who was driving this stolen Jeep, was arrested before he could get his hamburger.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed at the previous owner’s request on December 13, 2005.
