Honda Civic Stolen in Las Vegas Recovered by Auto Theft Detectives

The owner of a 2005 Honda Civic last saw the vehicel parked near his home in the 8800 block of Promised Land, Las Vegas, during the early evening hours of January 9, 2012. A short while later, the owner discovered the car missing and immediately contacted the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to report the theft.
The reporting officer responded to the scene, prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the stolen Honda’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Honda and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
Approximately two hours later, detectives’ with the Southern Nevada Auto Theft Task Force, known as VIPER, began picking up the silent LoJack signal with their LoJack-equipped undercover police cars. Following the LoJack computer’s cues, the detectives tracked the Honda to the area of W. Sunset Road and the 215 Beltway, and located the car abandoned near 7100 block of Garden Pond, Las Vegas. The detectives conducted surveillance on the vehicle for several hours with the hope that the suspect(s) would return to the Honda. When this did not happen, the detectives recovered the vehicle for safekeeping until it could be returned to the owner.
