Massachusetts State Police Recover Stolen Hyundai and Arrest Suspect

On an evening in early December 2011, the owner of a 2007 Hyundai Veracruz parked her vehicle outside of her residence in Revere, Massachusetts. When she returned to the vehicle the following morning, she discovered that it was missing. The victim immediately contacted the Revere Police Department to report the theft.
Revere Police responded to the scene, prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the stolen Hyundai’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Hyundai and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
A short while later, officers from the Massachusetts State Police Governor’s Auto Theft Strike Force (MASP-GATSF) began picking up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Hyundai on Police Tracking Computers installed in their police vehicles. One of the officers received a very strong signal in the area of Rt 16 in Everett. Following the computer cues, the officer was able to quickly locate the unoccupied and undamaged stolen vehicle, parked on Reed Avenue in Everett. With the assistance of other unmarked units, the officers set up surveillance on the stolen Hyundai. After a period of time, they observed a suspect return to the vehicle and get in. After a brief investigation, the officers placed the lone suspect under arrest for various felony charges. The keys to the vehicle were recovered at the scene. The Troopers had the vehicle towed from the scene for safekeeping and pending notification of the victim by the Revere Police.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Hyundai Veracruz at the owner’s request on June 1, 2010.
