New Orleans Police Recover Stolen GMC Pickup in Seven Minutes with Only Minor Ignition Damage

On the evening of December 29, the owner of a 2005 GMC Sierra pickup truck parked and secured his vehicle in the driveway of his residence. When he left his house the following morning, he discovered that the pickup had been stolen some time during the previous night. The victim immediately called and reported the auto theft to the New Orleans Police Department.
New Orleans Police responded to the scene, prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the stolen GMC’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the GMC and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
Just seven minutes later, officers with the New Orleans Police Department received the silent homing signal from the stolen pickup on the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) installed in their patrol cars. The officers then queried the LoJack “Reply Code” appearing on the PTC display screens with the police stolen vehicle computer system and received confirmation that the signal was coming from the GMC Sierra pickup reported stolen just minutes before. Following the computer’s cues, the officers tracked the signal and located the GMC Sierra, unoccupied and parked on Gentilly Boulevard. The ignition the steering column was defeated. The police recovered the pickup truck and impounded the vehicle for safekeeping until the owner could retrieve it.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the GMC Sierra pickup at the owner’s request in April 2005.
