This case involves a John Deere 410 backhoe stolen from a construction site. The owner had the good sense to have the LoJack® system installed on it, so it took local police less than three hours to track the machine down. In addition, the police found some other stolen vehicles as well.

On July 9th, 2013, the backhoe’s owner contacted the Prince George’s County Police to report that their unit was stolen from a construction site at in Waldorf, MD. Officers verified the theft and entered the backhoe’s information into the state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the John Deere, which was installed at a large national equipment rental company.

After a short while, detectives from the Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement team (WAVE) picked up the homing signals from the stolen backhoe on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The detectives tracked the backhoe to Belafonte Lane in Clinton, MD, where it was parked in a fenced storage lot. A search warrant was obtained and detectives recovered the stolen 410, as well as three stolen cars (a Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon and Pontiac Grand Prix) and a stolen Yamaha R-1 motorcycle.  The total value of all the stolen vehicles was $81,900. The John Deere was soon returned to the very relieved construction company.
