Construction equipment is large, slow moving, and usually bright yellow. It’s not the type of thing that’s easy to steal and conceal- and yet it happens very often. A construction company in Glendale, AZ left a 2013 John Deere 310 backhoe at their site one Friday afternoon, and when they returned to work on Monday, it was gone. Luckily, the rental company that owned the equipment was smart enough to install the LoJack® system on the machine, so, thanks to the Glendale PD, the backhoe was soon back ‘home’ at the job site.

On Monday, May 6th, 2013, workers called Glendale police to report the theft. Officers took a report and entered the vehicle equipment information into their local and national crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the machine, which was installed at Hertz Equipment.

A short time later, Glendale PD officers began picking up the homing signal from the stolen backhoe with the LoJack tracking computers installed in their police vehicles. Officers tracked the John Deere to an apartment complex parking lot on North 67th Avenue. The backhoe, valued at $80,000, was soon returned to its very relieved owners.
