Charlotte-Mecklenburg Ground & Aviation Units Use LoJack to Recover Stolen Takeuchi Mini Excavator

On November 29, 2012, United Rentals, the owner of a 2006 Takeuchi mini excavator, contacted the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) to report that their vehicle was stolen from a contractor’s job site near Myers Park Country Club out of Charlotte. 

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Takeuchi mini excavator.

A short while later, officers of the CMPD Aviation Unit picked up the silent LoJack homing signals from the stolen mini excavator on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their helicopter and patrol vehicles. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computers, the Aviation Unit led street patrol officers to the area of Queens Road East and Bucknell Avenue.  There, the officers located the mini excavator at a home being remodeled on Bucknell Avenue.  No suspect was identified, and no damage was done to the excavator.  United Rental was called to the recovery site to take possession of the excavator.

The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Takeuchi mini excavator in March of 2006 at the request of United Rentals.
