LoJack System Helps Santa Clara County Regional Auto Theft Task Force Recover Stolen 2002 Toyota Prius Taken In Residential Burglary

The owner of a 2002 Toyota Prius contacted the Los Altos Police Department to report their vehicle stolen. The owner advised an unknown person shining a flashlight in their face awakened them in their residence shortly after 3:00 AM.  The suspect obtained the keys to their Prius and left with the vehicle.  The Los Altos Police Department verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the 2002 Toyota Prius.    

A short while later, investigators with the Santa Clara County Regional Auto Theft Task Force were working in the city of San Jose, when they picked up the stolen Toyota Prius by means of the silent LoJack signal from the stolen vehicle, with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the stolen vehicle was tracked to a residential area in the 500 block of South 10th Street, where it was found unoccupied, parked, at the curb.  Officers established surveillance on the vehicle, but the suspect did not return.


The stolen Toyota Prius recovered by the Santa Clara County Regional Auto Task Force and towed/stored for processing for latent evidence prior to release back the owner.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2002 Toyota Prius in April 2002, at Toyota of Sunnyvale, in Sunnyvale, CA.
