The owner of a 2005 GMC Sierra contacted the Albuquerque Police Department and the LoJack Call Center to report their vehicle was stolen.  The owner advised the GMC was last seen in front of their apartment in the area of 12th and Lead.  When they woke up they discovered the GMC was missing.  The Albuquerque PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the GMC Sierra.

Approximately eleven minutes after the activation, flight officers with the Albuquerque PD Air5 picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Sierra with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in their patrol vehicles and aircraft.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the flight officers tracked the LoJack signal to the area of Rio Grande and Central in the Valley Area Command.

Detectives and Agents with the New Mexico Auto Theft Task Force (Albuquerque PD Auto Theft and New Mexico State Police Auto Theft) were monitoring the radio communications and drove into the area in their unmarked units also equipped with PTC’s.  Utilizing both ground and aerial surveillance the stolen GMC was observed driving in a reckless manner.  Rather than engaging in a risky pursuit, the GMC was covertly followed until it came to a stop across town in the area of Columbia and Smith in the Southeast Area Command.

Both occupants of the GMC exited the vehicle and took off on foot.  However, due to outstanding interagency teamwork by both air and ground units these offenders were quickly apprehended.  The stolen GMC was recovered and will be returned to the owner.  The two offenders’ cross town road trip concluded with a tour of the Metropolitan Detention Center for auto theft related charges.

The LoJack® System was installed in the GMC Sierra in July 2005 at North County GMC in Carlsbad, California.
