On Tuesday morning, May 15, 2012, the owner of a 2005 Ford F-350 pickup truck contacted the Broward County Sheriff’s Office to report their pickup truck stolen. Upon arrival at the scene, the responding officer met with the owner of the F-350 pickup truck, who stated that sometime during the night someone had stolen their pickup truck, with a trailer attached to it, from where they had parked it. After verifying the theft, the officer had the truck’s information entered into the federal and state crime computers, which activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short time later, a Miami Police Department officer received the Ford’s silent LoJack on his patrol car’s LoJack Police Tracking Computer. At the same time, a Miami-Dade Police Department officer picked up the same LoJack signal and began tracking it as well. The officers issued a “BOLO” (“be on the look out”) for the vehicle with a trailer attached.

The Miami officer located the LoJack-equipped vehicle near N.W. 15th Street and 7th Avenue. The truck was recovered, released to the owner at the scene, and removed from the police crime computers.

At the same time, the Miami-Dade officer observed a truck matching the Ford’s description towing a trailer, and attempted to stop it. The driver stopped the vehicle near N.W. 71st Street and N.W. 22nd Avenue and fled on foot. Officers established a perimeter, and quickly took the suspect into custody. A call to the owners of the truck and trailer revealed that both were stolen, but had not yet been reported as such to the police.

The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Ford F-350 pickup truck in January 2007 and has been protecting it ever since. This was another case of LoJack (inadvertently) recovering 2 vehicles with one LoJack unit.
