The owner of a 2008 Scion Xb loaned their car to a member of their family. The member drove the Scion to a store near 163rd Street and NE 15th Avenue. They parked the Scion in front of the store with the keys in the ignition, the engine running, the doors unlocked and went inside. When they returned to the Scion they discovered it missing. They contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department to report their Scion stolen. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers which automatically activates the LoJack® System concealed in the Scion.

The next evening while on routine patrol, a Miami-Dade PD aviation unit picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Scion on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC) that are installed in law enforcement patrol vehicles and aircraft. They picked up the signal near NW 6th Avenue and NW 79th Street. A Miami Police Department officer picked up the signal and began tracking it as well by following the directional and audible cues on their PTC screen. The officer observed the Scion near NW 1st Avenue and NW 60th Street. With the assistance of the Miami PD’s Air One, they were able to locate the Scion going northbound from NW 4th Avenue and NW 62nd Street. Whereupon the occupants exited the vehicle as a result of the helicopter’s searchlight shining down on them. The subjects fled on foot. A perimeter was set up for the area. Within minutes the suspects were apprehended near NW 1st Avenue and NW 64th Street. The suspects were arrested. One was arrested for Grand Theft Auto. The other was arrested for trespass in a vehicle. Both were transported to the Miami PD station for incarceration. The Scion was recovered, removed from state and federal crime information computer systems by the entering agency and towed to the police impound yard for safekeeping.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2008 Scion Xb in November 2007 at Lehman Toyota in Miami, Florida.
