The owner of a 2017 Toyota RAV-4 parked their SUV in front of a store in a shopping center near South Texas Avenue and Americana Boulevard, leaving the keys in the ignition, motor running and the window down. The owner ran into the store to pay a bill. When they exited the store, they discovered their SUV missing. They contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to report their vehicle stolen. The responding deputy prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers, which automatically activates the LoJack® System concealed in the Toyota. The deputy viewed a video of the parking lot and observed two subjects enter the Toyota and drive off.

Within minutes of activation while on routine patrol, an Orange County SO deputy picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen RAV-4 on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC), that are installed in law enforcement patrol vehicles, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The deputy began tracking the stolen Toyota by following the directional and audible cues on their PTC’s screen. The deputy, along with their backup, located the sport utility vehicle parked in the backyard of a house in the 100 block of South Pine Hills Road. Two subjects were standing next to the Toyota. The reporting deputy responded to the scene and positively identified the two subjects as the ones who entered the Toyota and drove off. The suspects were arrested. Both suspects had been arrested before and were currently on probation. The SUV was recovered, removed from state and federal crime information computer systems by the entering agency and released to the owner, who responded to the scene.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2017 Toyota RAV-4 in March 2017 at Central Florida Toyota in Orlando, Florida.
