The owner of a 2007 Nissan Murano contacted the Miami Gardens Police Department to report their vehicle stolen by their “friend.”  The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers which automatically activates the LoJack® System concealed in the Nissan.

Later that morning, while on routine patrol, a Miami Gardens PD officer picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Murano on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC) that are installed in law enforcement patrol vehicles, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The officer began tracking the stolen Nissan by following the directional and audible cues on their PTC’s screen but lost the signal as it was moving rapidly in the opposite direction that the officer was driving. Shortly thereafter, the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Aviation Unit Helicopter picked up the LoJack signal upon take-off from the Opa Locka Airport. The pilot notified a MDPD-Northwest unit with a PTC in their patrol car to respond to the area. The pilot had a slight problem tracking the Nissan as the vehicle was in the flight path of Opa Locka Airport. Once the pilot had clearance, they guided the ground unit to where the Nissan was located. The patrol officer and a MDPD detective performed a “felony stop” on the Nissan which parked on the swale of the roadway near NW 29th Avenue and NW 152nd Terrace.  The Miami Gardens PD responded to the scene to continue the investigation. The SUV was recovered, removed from state and federal crime information computer systems by the entering agency and released to the owner at the scene.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2007 Nissan Murano in October 2015 at Lexus of North Miami in Florida.
