The owner of a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta called the Albuquerque Police Department to report their vehicle was stolen from their apartment complex parking lot located in the area of Juan Tabo and Eubank.  The Albuquerque PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Volkswagen Jetta.

A short time after the activation, officers with the Rio Rancho Police Department picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Volkswagen with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in their patrol vehicles.  Officers were advised that this Volkswagen was just involved in a robbery of an electronics store in the Albuquerque PD’s Northwest Area Command.  Following the audible and directional cues from the PTC, the Jetta was tracked to the area of Alameda and 2nd Street.  The Jetta took off at a high rate of speed in an attempt to elude law enforcement from Rio Rancho PD, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and Albuquerque PD.

The Jetta stopped at several locations in an attempt to hide and each time law enforcement got close enough to make contact the Jetta would take off at a high rate of speed.  To avoid any chance of a dangerous pursuit, law enforcement utilized communication and teamwork to follow the Jetta while using the LoJack PTC.  The Jetta drove through multiple jurisdictions until it finally stopped at an area casino where the driver abandoned the vehicle in the parking lot.  A sergeant with the Valencia County Sheriff’s Department was on his way home after his shift when he picked up the silent LoJack signal and located the abandoned Jetta.  An officer with the Isleta Police Department assisted the Valencia County SD sergeant and recovered the stolen Jetta.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Volkswagen Jetta in January 2015 at University Mazda and Volkswagen in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
