LoJack® System Helps Law Enforcement Recover Stolen Caterpillar 303C Mini Excavator

The owner of a 2007 Caterpillar 303C mini excavator determined after several months that their piece of construction equipment had been taken by fraud by a customer. After numerous attempts to contact the customer in various means, the owner contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department to report their machine stolen. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers.

Shortly thereafter, while on routine patrol, a Miami Beach Police Department officer picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Caterpillar 303C on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). The officer began tracking the stolen machine by following the directional and audible cues on the PTC screen. The officer, along with their backup, located the mini excavator in the 1500 block of West 21st Street at a construction site where it had been sitting for approximately 6 months. The mini excavator was recovered, towed to the police impound yard for safekeeping, and removed from state and federal crime information computer systems.
