Denver Police Recover Stolen Ford Escape Minutes After Theft is Reported

On the afternoon of April 4, 2012, the owner of a 2003 Ford Escape contacted the Denver Police Department to report the vehicle stolen. 

The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the Ford’s information entered into the state and federal crime computer systems – a routine police action that automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed within the Escape. Neither the owner nor law enforcement agents had to take any further action to initiate tracking of the vehicle, as LoJack’s interface with the police is both seamless and instantaneous.

Minutes later, officers in three different jurisdictions (Denver, Auraria Campus and Arvada Police Departments) began picking up the Escape’s silent LoJack signal on their patrol vehicles’ LoJack Police Tracking Computer. Following the directional and signal strength cues on the tracking computer, a Denver officer on routine patrol quickly located the vehicle near 13th and King Streets, where the still-warm vehicle had been abandoned by the thief. The officer recovered the undamaged vehicle.

The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Ford Escape at the request of the owner in June 2004.
