The owner of a 2010 Toyota Prius 4-door sedan requested a friend of theirs to check on their home as they were out of town. The friend went to check on the home. When they arrived, as they were approaching the front door they observed it damaged. They believed it had been kicked in. The friend immediately contacted the Jacksonville Police. Upon arrival at the house, the investigating officer cleared the residence. Apparently the residence was burglarized. Upon speaking with the owner, it was determined that there was a spare set of keys in the house, but they were missing as was the car. The investigating officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers.

Immediately upon activation, while on routine patrol, a Jacksonville Police Department officer picked up the silent LoJack signal emanating from the stolen Prius on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). The officer began tracking the stolen vehicle by following the directional and audible cues on their PTC’s screen. The officer, along with their backup, located the 4-door sedan occupied in the 5900 block of Green Hill Lane. The officer discovered a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the car. A check of the driver’s license revealed that it was suspended indefinitely. The suspect was arrested for Grand Theft Auto, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Driving With a Suspended License. The car was recovered, towed to the police impound yard for safekeeping, and removed from state and federal crime information computer systems.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2010 Toyota Prius 4-door sedan at Toyota Chula Vista, Chula Vista – California in October, 2009.
