The owners of a 2006 Yamaha YZF motorcycle contacted the Huntington Beach Police Department to report their motorcycle was stolen. The HBPD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Yamaha.
Only 43 minutes later officers from the Anaheim Police Department airship “Angel” picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Yamaha with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, airship Angel tracked the Yamaha to the area of Euclid and Broadway in the city of Anaheim. The Anaheim PD patrol officers equipped with PTC’s responded to the area and tracked the Yamaha to a business complex in Anaheim. The directional signal pointed to a specific business.
An Anaheim PD detective arrived and made contact with a subject inside the business. The detective asked the subject if he had a motorcycle inside the business and the subject stated he did not. When the detective pressed further he was given permission to enter the business. When the detective and officers entered the business they located four motorcycles lined up against a wall. One of the motorcycles was the LoJack equipped Yamaha. Officers checked the other three motorcycles and determined all three were also reported stolen. The motorcycles were a 2011 Kawasaki ZX (Anaheim PD stolen), 2005 Suzuki R600 (Anaheim PD stolen) and a 2013 Yamaha (Fullerton PD stolen). Officers also checked vehicles parked just outside the business and found four additional stolen vehicles. The vehicles were a 2006 GMC Sierra, 2006 Mercedes ML 500 (Anaheim PD stolen), 2011 BMW X3, and a 2012 Nissan 370Z which was taken during an armed carjacking. All the motorcycles and cars were reported stolen to Orange County Police agencies. The only vehicle equipped with a LoJack tracking device was the Yamaha that led the officers to the location.
All motorcycles and cars were recovered and the suspect was arrested.
The LoJack® System was installed in the Yamaha YZF in November 2006 at Hahm Motorsports Inc., in Anaheim, California.
