The owners of a 1998 Mercedes S420 contacted the Ontario Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen.

Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Mercedes.

A short time later, the San Bernardino City School Police officers picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Mercedes with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in their patrol vehicles.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers tracked the Mercedes to the area of the 400 block of W 23rd Street. The officers requested that investigators from SANCATT (San Bernardino County Auto Theft Task Force) respond to their location. After the investigators arrived and set up a perimeter around the house, they observed the stolen Mercedes exit the garage and observed a second stolen vehicle (2012 Nissan Altima) being driven by an additional suspect. The Nissan then followed the stolen Mercedes from the location. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the stolen Mercedes and took the driver into custody.  The trailing Nissan Altima attempted to hide in a parking lot in the area of 17th St and ‘E’ Street.  SANCATT Investigators followed the trailing vehicle and took that suspect into custody. During the course of the investigation, SANCATT Investigators found property in the Nissan connecting the vehicle to an attempted murder investigation in San Bernardino.  A follow-up investigation was also conducted at the suspect’s residence, where a search warrant was served, and additional property belonging to the victim of the Mercedes was located. SANCATT Investigators recovered approximately $2,000.00 in US Currency and approximately $1,500.00 in jewelry along with personal property belonging to the owner of the Mercedes.

The vehicles were impounded for safe keeping.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Mercedes S420 in December 1997 at House of Imports Mercedes in Buena Park, California.
