The owner of a 2007 Honda XR650L motorcycle discovered their motorcycle missing. They contacted the Duval County Sheriff’s Office to report their vehicle stolen. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers.

While on routine patrol, a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputy picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen XR650L motorcycle in the area of LPGA Boulevard and Nova Road in Holly Hill. The deputy eventually pinpointed the motorcycle’s location to be in the 700 block Walker Street in Holly Hill. The deputy drove to the rear of the house where they believed the motorcycle was located. The deputy deployed their K-9 partner and took a tactical position while members of the Holly Hill Police Department and a Volusia County SO deputy attempted to make contact with the targeted house. Officers from the Holly Hill PD and the VCSO deputy made contact with an occupant of the house. When the occupant opened the gate the officers could see the stolen motorcycle in plain view. The tracking deputy and their K-9 partner responded to the front of the targeted house. At that point the tracking deputy met with the occupant of the house and explained the purpose of the visit. The occupant then gave the deputy permission to enter the property. The deputy verified the motorcycle was in fact the Honda which had been reported stolen out of Duval County. The motorcycle had been repainted and had a toggle switch installed to by-pass the ignition. The deputy then asked the occupant of the house if he knew anything about the motorcycle in his backyard. The occupant advised that another occupant had brought the motorcycle over about a week before and that they had bought the motorcycle for $600. The supposed owner of the Honda failed to produce the registration or title which they said was at home in Orange Park. The suspect continuously gave the officers other versions of how they had gotten the motorcycle which was also a little strange. Another occupant of the house volunteered to go to the suspect’s home in Orange Park to retrieve the Bill of Sale, but the suspect stated that either they threw it away or their dog probably “chewed it up.” The suspect was ultimately arrested for Grand Theft Auto and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail. The motorcycle was recovered, towed to the police impound yard for safekeeping, and removed from state and federal crime information computer systems.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2007 Honda XR650L motorcycle in October 2007 at Rick Case Cycles in Davie, Florida.
