The owner of a 2000 Mercedes-Benz S430 contacted the Franklin Park Police Department to report that his vehicles, all his personal effects and property were taken by his landlord when he had been away for a while. The Franklin Park PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Mercedes-Benz.
One hour later Patrol Officers from the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and a Trooper from the Illinois State Police (ISP) picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Mercedes Benz with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the CPD Officers and the ISP trooper tracked the Mercedes to a retail store parking lot in the 5400 block of North Harlem Ave in Chicago’s Norwood Park neighborhood. The Mercedes had a different plate than reported stolen on it, but the vehicle identification number matched the reported stolen vehicle. As the Mercedes was being recovered the current owner arrived on scene. A vehicle title was produced showing proof of purchase. Investigation on scene showed the seller to be the victim’s landlord. The Mercedes was towed by the police for investigation into legal ownership, no arrests made on scene.
The LoJack® System was installed in the Mercedes Benz S430 in September of 1999 at Autohaus Mercedes-Benz in Pompano Beach, Florida.
