The victim in this case was a national home improvement retailer in Reno, NV, that also rents trucks, vans and construction equipment. These businesses know that having one of their machines stolen means not only the loss of an asset, but the rental income it generates as well. That’s why the owners of this store, like so many other similar companies, chose to protect their fleet with the LoJack® system, so, if one is stolen, local law enforcement can track it down quickly and safely.

When a rented Ford F-250 was not returned when promised, the store’s management discovered the contact information given by the customer was false, and immediately contacted the Reno Police. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the NCIC national vehicle theft data base. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short while later, officers with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol both began to receive the homing signal from the stolen truck on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers tracked the Ford to a lot at Steamboat Parkway and Damonte Drive, where it was parked and abandoned. The F-250 was retrieved and soon returned to the grateful store employees.
