Construction equipment is a popular target of thieves. It’s valuable and hard to locate once it’s stolen, since many machines look alike- unless the item’s owner was smart enough to have the LoJack® system installed. LoJack sends a silent homing signal to local law enforcement, allowing them to locate and retrieve the stolen machine, even if it’s hidden from view. In this case, an Ingersoll Rand P185 air compressor stolen from a Chicago construction site is recovered the same day it was taken, thanks to local police assisted by LoJack.

On September 30th, 2013, the construction company called Chicago Police to report the crime. Officers verified the theft and entered the machine’s information into the LEADS and NCIC local and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack transponder installed in the air compressor.

Later that same day, officers from the Chicago Police 10th and 11th Districts began receiving homing signals from the Ingersoll Rand on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their squad cars. They tracked the machine to a storage lot on 14th St and Western Ave, where it was hidden from view. The air compressor was soon returned to its very grateful owner.

Chicago Major Auto Theft Investigation Unit (CMATI) was contacted and arrived on scene.  CMATI’s investigation led to the recovery of two ATV’s, two pieces of construction equipment, a snow plow and a truck which had been reported stolen. The recovered property was worth over $100,000. Michigan Police also searched the location and recovered ten items reported stolen.
