Most career car thieves are aware of the LoJack® system. More specifically, they are aware of its existence. They don’t know whether it’s on a certain vehicle or not because it’s hidden. That’s why many LoJack vehicle recoveries happen in public parking spaces or near deserted homes or businesses. Crooks will park stolen cars, trucks, vans or motorcycles in these areas, where they may not be noticed otherwise, to see if they are tracked down by police assisted by LoJack, as the Toyota Camry in this case was.

On September 16th, 2013, the Toyota’s owner contacted the Chesapeake Police to report that their vehicle was stolen. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the Camry, which was installed at Toyota of Lake Norman in Huntersville, NC.

A short while later, officers from the Chesapeake PD picked up the homing signals from the stolen Toyota on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers tracked the vehicle to the parking lot of a hotel on Crossways Blvd, where it was found parked and unoccupied. The police recovered the undamaged Camry and quickly returned it to its relieved owner.
