Construction machines are a popular target for many thieves. Although the vehicles themselves are quite large and don’t move very fast, the equipment is often left at job sites unguarded over the weekend. The rise in these machines being stolen is why so many owners choose to install the LoJack® System on their construction vehicles, so local law enforcement will have an advantage allowing them to retrieve the machines fast.

On July 8th, 2013, a construction company owner contacted the Houston Police Department and reported that his Case 580 backhoe had been stolen from a job site in West Houston sometime over the previous weekend. Houston PD verified the theft and entered the machine’s information into the state and federal crime computers. This action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Case, which was installed at a large equipment dealership.

A short while later, a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter picked up the homing signal from the stolen backhoe on the LoJack tracking computer installed in their airship. The helicopter crew located the Case in a rural area, where it was hidden in a grove of trees. The flight crew directed Highway Patrol troopers to the location. The troopers recovered the backhoe and soon returned it to its grateful owner.
