Have you ever seen a random piece of construction equipment, parked all by itself in the middle of ‘nowhere’, and wonder how it got there? Often, thieves will steal a machine, and park it in an obscure place to let the search die down. If the vehicle is protected by the LoJack® system, it will send off a homing signal so law enforcement will be able to track it down and return it to its rightful owners.

On May 16th, 2013, a construction crew arrived at their job site located off U S 290 in Houston and discovered the Case 580M Backhoe they had rented had been stolen overnight. Houston PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into their state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the backhoe, which was installed at a large national rental company.

A short while later, officers from Houston PD picked up the homing signals from the stolen machine on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. They tracked the vehicle to a public street where the Case was parked and abandoned. The backhoe, valued at $45,000, was soon returned to the grateful rental company.
