Sometimes, tracking a stolen vehicle using the LoJack® system is like peeling an onion- there are many layers you can’t see from the outside. The Fayetteville, North Carolina police and the North Carolina DMV License and Theft Inspectors found this to be the case when they tracked a stolen Harley Davidson Sportster- and also found two other stolen bikes, ‘chop shop’ equipment and drug paraphernalia.

On April 24th, 2013, the owner of a 2010 Harley Davidson Sportster contacted the Fayetteville Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen from their apartment complex parking lot in Fayetteville, NC.  The victim had been at work overnight hours and returned home to discover the motorcycle missing. Fayetteville PD verified the theft and entered the VIN (vehicle information into their state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Harley Davidson, which was installed at Ray Price Harley Davidson in Raleigh, NC.

A short while later, NCDMV License and Theft inspectors picked up the homing signals from the stolen bike on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The inspectors tracked the vehicle to a single family dwelling off Kennesaw Drive. Fayetteville PD officers joined the NCDMV inspectors in searching the residence where they found the stolen Harley, two other stolen motorcycles with their VINs and engine numbers defaced, as well as equipment and drug related items. The stolen Sportster was soon returned to its owner.
