Have you ever rented a vehicle and not returned it? Although this doesn’t make sense to most of us, you would be surprised how many times a leasing company does not get a car or truck returned and have to report it as stolen. Many of these companies install the LoJack® system on their inventory, so, if the customer does not return the vehicle, the local police are able to retrieve it quickly.

On Saturday afternoon, March 2nd, 2013, the security manager of a home improvement store contacted the Sunrise, FL Police to report that a 2011 Ford Econoline Rental van was overdue and believed to be stolen. The responding officer entered the van’s VIN (vehicle identification number) into their state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the Econoline.

A short while later, a Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy picked up the homing signal from the stolen Econoline on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle. He was assisted by officers from the Fort Lauderdale PD, Plantation PD, and Miami Gardens PD. The van was tracked to the store location in Sunrise, where the officers met with the manager and the renter and discovered that there was a little confusion as to whether the vehicle was really stolen. The vehicle is now back in the store’s possession and the renter has settled his bill.
