Honda Motorcycle Recovered Quickly After Theft, Suspect Arrested After Trying to Evade Officers

On the evening of May 18, 2012, the owner of a 2006 Honda CBR1000 parked his motorcycle in a space in front of his apartment building, where he could occasionally check on it, and went to bed. When he awoke the following morning, he discovered the motorcycle missing, and immediately reported the theft to the Burlington Police Department. Burlington officers verified the theft and had the Honda’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers, which activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the motorcycle.
A short time later, Durham Police Department officers on routine patrol began to pick up the Honda’s silent LoJack homing signal on the LoJack Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol units. Following the directional and audible cues on the LoJack Tracker, the officers determined that the bike was in motion in the downtown Durham area. Other Durham officers were called in to set a perimeter around the area to avoid a chase. The officers then approached the motorcycle operator; once the operator saw the police, he dismounted the bike and began to flee on foot. Officers quickly took the suspect into custody. The motorcycle’s ignition had been damaged, and the sides scratched when the suspect dropped the bike.
Durham Police had the motorcycle stored until the victim could travel to Durham to take possession. The suspect was arrested for felony possession of stolen property and traffic offenses. Burlington Police are continuing the investigation to determine whether this suspect or others stole the motorcycle.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Honda motorcycle at the owner’s request in May 2008.
